The Arrival / Taking over the Class - Day 9

Today was not only out first day as teachers but our first day going through the Arrival in with the year 7s.

They were very lively when we had our class today, lots of ideas and talking about the book.

They filled in a sheet based on a picture of two characters, coming up with personalities and identities for them from one image.

While several uses the same information, others were quite out there and different. Some features they made up were "3 ft tall" and "ginger but they don't like it" and several mentioned characters liking "dick alcohol", quite a few mentioned they interpreted the characters as "sad or depressed".

We read through the first chapter and I asked them about each page and their interpretation. They had a lot of detective or spy themed ideas which I found particularly interesting.

When I asked them where they thought it was set the answers were varied wildly. From "New York" to "Dragon Town" and believe it or not "Chernobyl". The images made them think of things like the fire of London and jurassic Park.

Ciara took down every idea they had on the white board, there were a lot of similarities but some were truly individual.

I was very happy with how the class turned out, they really enjoyed the book and that definitely helps. I will take the same approach with the year 8s tomorrow and then proceed with the 7s.

Until the next installment.

Here we have the white board on which their ideas are displayed.
